It would have to be Hudya Nikabolokof.
He was an amazing poet and war veteran. He was an amazing man who nearly lost his life in the great war. Shrapnel from a mine maimed him for life and he lost a ball apparently.

I don’t read any poetry, comparing the snippets of Pushkin and Anna Akhmatova I’ve had to read, I guess Ahkmatova.
For writer, I recently read Gogol’s Dead Soul’s, and it is my favorite by a Russian author – it’s actually decently funny, and has some great quotes on various topics (too long to remember, but they sound great on paper). For short stories my favorite is the Gambler by Dostoevsky.

Favorite Russian writer is Tolstoy. For years I did not attempt to read War and Peace and then I finally put my mind to it. What a book! Not just long, but brilliant. Characters, human interaction, the futility of armed conflict, the role of the individual in society…tour de force. Anna Karenina is also a mighty book. Short stories are brilliant too. As for poet, Yvegeny Yevtushenko.. a brilliant 2oth century Russian poet.

According to my literary tastes my fav Russian writer is Anton Chekhov: his plays and tales are not about Russian pre-revolutionary life, but about men & women in any time. But I acknowledge that the greatest of them all was Nikolaj Gogol’. As someone wrote, all Russian writers came out form Gogol’s “Coat” (one of his greatest tales).

Yvevgevny Zamyatin- We is an awesome science fiction book, which prophesized the society created under Stalin eight years before it happened and Soviet Heretic and the Dragon are great books. he was a highly regarded and wll known playwright/poet/writer/editor, lecturer/professor, unfortunately his works are hard to find and generally not included in alot of websites cause all his works were destroyed and removed from existence under Stalin who exiled him. his existing works are translations from other countries.

Lermontov for a poet from classics and Vysotskiy as a poet from modern era.
As for writers, there’s no one that touched my heart (and DEFINITELY my mind) as Bulgakov. As for contemporary… I’d say Akunin.
