There are many possibilities but there is strong evidence that he was assasinated by MI5 (The bullet that killed him was from a pistol only used by the British, the British were extremely concerned that Rasputin was calling for Russia's withdrawal from the Great War, and the diary of MI5 officer John Scale's chaffeur, William Compton, point to Scale and another officer Oswald Rayner being his killers)

The Czar's home guard
Edward G says
Prince Felix Yusupov and The Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich invited Rasputin to a dinner in his honor. They served him foods laced with cyanide, but it had no effect on Rasputin.
Then, in desperation, he was shot through the back. They thought he died, but when Yusupov returned, Rasputin got up and lunged at him. However, others came in and again, shot Rasputin. He still didn't die, so he was clubbed. Thinking he died, they threw him into the icy river. Later, when the body was recovered, it was found he finally died from drowning.
