Question by dancingkween: Why did a lot of Jews immigrate from Russia to America in the late 1800s/early 1900s?
This is kind of two questions in one: why did they immigrate from Russia, and why did they immigrate to America in particular?

Before Hitler, German Jews were much better off than Russian Jews.
Russia had laws limiting, regulating, & persecuting Jews.
Why America? It was the land of opportunity. Europe had its own problems. Which is why people from many countries left.
Don't think too many Americans–proportionately–were immigrating to Europe. Or anywhere else.

I wish the US would absorb any Israeli who would come here and let the people who celebrated in the streets, when we were hit on 9-11 , have their sandpile and whatever .
