The Russian orthodox Christianity came from Byzantine in the X cent., and Byzantine inherited the tradition from Greece.
As for Moscow, Ivan Kalita was the key to centralization during the Tatar-Mongul reign over the Russian principates. Kalita cooperated with the Monguls and helped them collect the money from the villages and towns, for which he earned their trust and respect. With a lot of clever political and military campaigns he got their complete approval and expanded his influence to many principates around Moscow. Kalita means ’wallet‘ in old Russian. He was very rich and very eager to get more.
With all the power collected around one principate, Kalita’s grandson Dmitry Donskoy went ahead and defeated the Tatars, thus making the state independent. And more expansion followed.
Hope that answers the question.
