Question by ar: Why did China consider the USSR an enemy during the 20th century?
I read somewhere that there was a period in which China and the USSR were enemies. It kind of puzzled me since they both were Marxist countries and they are allies now also. What caused this rift and what happened between the two countries during this period?

There was an outbreak of fighting in 1929 over a territory dispute, but that was quickly resolved. There was also border fighting in 1969 over an island in a river forming a mutual border.
The reason the ~50 yr rift (and possible the second border conflict) occurred in the first place is basically because the Lenin version of communism did not work in China. The Soviet's felt the revolution needed to come from the urban working class. In China, that was a very small group in the 1950's. They needed to depend on the farmer instead. Lenin would not adulterate his vision and Mao knew it was impossible to implement.
