Question by megz: why did Yuri Gagarin go to space?
i know he was the first to go to space, and when he came back he became very famous, but i dont know why he went to space in the first place. what did he want to find out? And did he succeed in finding it?

It was to upstage USA – basically back then it was a space race as to which super power could achieve this 1st person in space.
He himself was merely in the right place at the correct time.

During early unmanned space exploration, whenever something went wrong with the equipment, nothing could be done to correct it most of the time. With a man in space, they had the ability to repair problems. Also, having a man in space gave scientists flexibility to adjust and deal with situations that were not expected or planned for.
Politicians used the first man in space as a way of proving to other countries that their country was smarter and better.
