Lenin had come to know Stalin’s real character and did not trust him.
He wanted him removed, but died before this could be accomplished-
much to the Soviet Union’s sorrow.

Answer by Scotter
He suspected as much. He knew that Stalin was more interested in a power grab than trotski. Lenin also figures that Stalin was a paranoid power mad brute. Lenin was right. Stalin was one of the most deadly leaders in history. Because Stalin was not only a thugs but also brilliant and proactive he forced trotski out and likely ordered trotski’s death in mexico. There is no telling how the soviet union would have turned out under trotski, but it is likely the purges never would have happened. Also the persecution of the kulaks and the horrible consequences of collectivization would have been lessened somewhat. Also, without the purges the soviet military would have been much better prepared in 1941. Perhaps ww2 would have been over much more quickly without the soviets having to rebuild theory forces mid war. The cold war still would have likely occurred as trotski was a die hard communist. Tue world would he different though.
