Question by Super Kitteh: Why did the Leauge of Militant Atheists assist Stalin in trying to wipe out religion in the USSR?
What reasons did they give for killing religious people? Why did they want atheism to be the state religion of the USSR and not allow other religions to exist?

The organisation using that name (I'm assuming you're referring to the Общество безбожников) was a part of the communist party structure. Which is probably why they were working with the Soviet government.
Anyone can use the word atheism. Anyone, regardless of political ideology, can be an atheist. Any atheist that does not share their political ideology is not responsible for their actions. The lack of belief in a deity didn't make them do this, their political convictions did.
Also, atheism is not and can never be a religion. Please at least try to grasp that fact.

Stalin's actions were not driven by atheism.
Atheism cannot be a religion.
It can be a philosophy, but not a religion.
Religion is old fashioned and slows down the advancement of humanity.

The USSR was very far left (Communist) and controlled every aspect of it's citizen's lives including religion.

Stalin was no different, from the Pharaoh, the Caesar, the King, or any other totalitarian Dictator. Stalin wanted to be worshiped as a god, a king, a Pharaoh, etc.
Pharaohs and Kings think of themselves as gods. They want the people looking only at them and not at their religious entities.
Satan's number one job is to distract people from God. The closer a believer gets to the Lord, the more Satan attacks the believer until the believer overcomes him.

Stalin wanted people to worship him and no other as is normal in authoritarian dictatorships, I would have thought that was obvious

Religions are powerful political organizations. Most dictatorships want them abolished so that the people will be subservient only to the government.
BTW, there is no such thing as atheism being a "state religion". Atheism is the lack of belief in a deity. Please try to get your facts straight.

You make the Claim Christians fought the Muslims in the dark ages yet it was the NON Christian Catholic Church and The Muslims had forced their rule over Israel in this time , It was the Catholic Church , who falsified their beliefs as Christian who duped many Christians to join their ranks.
However these Crusades were attempting to return Israel to Israel and Freedom.
It was the Catholic Church Who is NOT Christian , the proof is not only Biblical but is Historical through the proof that they had entered into a Contract with Hitler to attack other Christians in return for the Betrayal of the True Christians !
There were about 10,million True Christians killed because of this Betrayal!
