Why did the soviet republics reject the concept of unity and declared independence after the USSR communist Government fell, and lost control.

Actually they didn't.
A referendum was held across the republics, and 80 percent voted to keep the union.

Because they hated communist oppression. They were also taken over by the soviet empire and wanted independence back.
