Germany attacked Russia because he knew an attack was coming from them
Germany could keep the British at bay fairly easily because of the English channel but if russia attacked from the East it meant Britian could attack from the west at the same time.
Which is what happened when the USa joined the war.
Hitler attacked russia to weaken them before they were attacked from both sides

its simple. hitler was a tactical idiot. it isn't wise to fight people that feared the nazis on one side and feared stalin on the other
