Question by marielsa83: Why is it Anna Karenina if the last name was Karenin?
I read Anna Karenina a few years back. But I never unstood why the title says Karenina, when the last name was Karenin. Can anyone tell me why?

In Russian, women add the feminine ending “-a” to their last names.

In many Slavic languages it's customary for women to add feminine endings such as 'a' / 'ova' / 'ska' to their surnames.
