u_bin_called has most of it right.
Russia also disparately wants an oil pipeline to the Persian Gulf.
What Putin doesn't seem to realize – he is playing with fire (nuclear) – The Supreme Leader of Islam wants weapons and World Domination.

Probably for the same reason they gave so much aid to Saddam Hussein before the U.S. invasion caused all his checks to bounce (you didn't think Russia's objection to the invasion was on moral grounds…did you?)
Compare and Contrast….The Clinton/Yeltsin years were personified by two leaders that liked to have a good time and let other people deal with their problems … They were both replaced my men who represented a drastic ideological shift … In short Bush and Putin did their darndest to put the U.S. and Russia (respectively) back atop the "head honcho" totem pole.
Russia has been shoring up its presence in the Persian Gulf since before people actually figured out that "the Czar" and "the Tsar" were actually the same guy…They want the "warm water" port and they want influence in what they know is going to be the economic center of the globe in a couple decades.
Russia is helping out its OWN situation…which is what countries are supposed to do….I never could figure out why the U.S. was held to a different standard.

If they have the skill to build a Nuclear Power plant you deserve the right to build it and charge a price/bid/estimate. Its called the free market. It has nothing to do with what nation is that or whatever?
They build cars in Iran with Chinese parts which the US automakers are using to make cars/trucks. China owns 51% of Ford and Chevy in China and China trades with Russia everyday.
Does that mean the US is wrong then?
