Of course their nuclear arsenal and delivery systems is the heart of their really great military power.
But beyond that, the Russians are an admirable people. They have great scientists, musicians, artists and philosophers. They are physically imposing, brave, and have great endurance. Even after 70 years, young people remember how Russia fought during WWII.
Russia is considered powerful because they are a powerful people.
As for Putin, he should be in Siberia.

Besides that they're the # 2 or 3 military power in the world. They have an extremely large amount of oil, and a couple months ago, they nearly caused an energy crisis in Europe because they decided to cut off power to Ukraine. They also have veto power in the UN, and before this financial crisis, they had one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

Because of their military might. They have almost the same amount of nuclear warheads and missiles as we do. They alone could blow up planet earth many times over.
They have a big stick, and the fact that they don't have a great economy is a bad thing, since they don't mind selling some of their weapons to the highest bidder..
