The Cuban missile crisis was fought out by the USSR and the USA with poor old Cuba as more of an onlooker than an active participant. Nikita K was the leader of the USSR and so he agreed the policy of stationing the missiles in Cuba and ultimately agreed to take them away again. In return the US pulled missiles out of Turkey – Russia's back yard but the USSR agreed not to publicise this, ultimately weakening NK's position and probably leading to his downfall. So why was he important? Leader of one of the parties involved and instigator of the policy that led to the crisis.

Because he was the Russian dictator officially the First Secretary to the Soviet Union from 1953-1964.. Cuba was a communist satellite of Russia. Confrontations, phone calls, and cables went back and forth from Krushchev and President John F. Kennedy to try and prevent nuclear war and end the Cuban Missile Crisis. It ended when the US blockaded (surrounded ) Cuba and threatened to turn back any approaching ship. The US secretly promised to remove missiles from Turkey six months later. The Russians removed offensive missiles from Cuba.
