Question by : Would Russia be safer if the Communist hardliners had taken over in the early nineties and not Yeltsin?
Russia today has high HIV, crime, racial and ethnic problems, corruption, bad economy, the disease called the Russian Mafia and has fallen behind China, EU and perhaps India in global power. Lets not forget the horrible nineties too.
If there was no Yeltsin and the Communist hardliners won, would things be better?

That’s a very subjective question, how do you define better?

Every nation is falling behind China, due to the fact China is experiencing rapid growth.
Germany fell behind China a few years back….therefore….they were better off with Hitler?

Russia has fallen behind Brazil as a global power! Brazil now has a larger, wealthier economy than Russia.
The communists drove Russia into the ground in the first place. It was the economic decline in the first place during the 1980s that forced them to reform and eventually led to the collapse of the communist party.

No! The problems were caused by the former USSR going bankrupt. This is what happens when governments simply run out of money and can’t borrow anymore. Nobody’s politics have any value unless the politicians have some money to back up their words.
As for safer – safety is subjective, on the one hand in a police state you don’t have crime or racial or ethnic problems (you still have corruption and can still have a bad economy) but in a police state anyone who says the wrong thing disappears in the night, people have no freedom to say what they want or to aspire to achieve their dreams, their only aspirations are what the state tells them they are allowed to have. So the issue is not whether it’s more safe to live in a police state both are dangerous the issue is simply from where that danger is coming.
Everyone I know would prefer very slightly less freedom in exchange for feeling a little safer but there are limits to how many freedoms people are willing to give up for the sake of feeling safe and there are a growing number of people that I hear about on the news who feel that we have already sacrificed too many of our rights and freedoms.
