The Cherry Orchard is an excellent place to start for his plays (though it was the last he wrote) and The Lady With The Dog (also translated as Lady With The Lap Dog or Lady With The Little Dog) is a good one to begin with for his short stories. Both are excellent pieces. Don’t read them expecting `stories’ in a neat package. Chekhov wrote reality. His works don’t always tie up neatly in the end – just as reality doesn’t. Cherry Orchard is somewhat of an exception to this rule – somewhat.
