Can you drive across the frozen Volga river in winter?

Question by Person P: Is it possible to drive across the frozen Volga in winter?
I’ve read that it is possible on some websites (though some fishermen apparently died attempting it), but can’t find any details. If it is possible, then in what areas, and at what point in the year?

This isn’t something I intend to attempt, I promise!

Yes. It gets at least 20 centimeters thick, occasionally deeper that that. This is at Tver, located at the confluence of the Volga and Tvertsa Rivers.

That is thick enough to support a vehicle but isn’t safe enough for a public route.
