Question by Glenn Harvey Fingler: Why do you think that Russia helped Serbia by declaring war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1914?
Solzhenitsyn wrote that friendship should stop short of self-immolation, in reference to this. The Russians knew that war with Austria-Hungary also meant war with Germany.

it was a mutual defense treaty
just as Austria-Hungary had one with Germany
and France and England had one with each other and Russia
was basically like dominoes, once one fell they all fell
