Does beluga caviar come from an endangered species?

Question by cpinatsi: Does beluga caviar come from an endangered species? Anything to do with beluga whales?
The name is similar, but whales are mammals, so they don’t produce eggs, so no caviar. So is it environmentally OK rto eat caviar, lol?

It is more environmentally OK to eat caviar than to own a computer. It comes from the beluga sturgeon.

Caviar is made from the eggs of beluga sturgeon, a large fish found only in the Black Sea.
Harvesting the eggs causes the death of the sturgeon, and this species does not produce eggs until old.
Obviously, the lack of eggs and reproductive females is dangerous for the sturgeons.

The name is related to the whale. It is the Russian word for white.
