State communism will always fail because of the impossibility of central economic planning. The writing was already on the wall by the time old birthmark forehead came into power.

The important thing to remember is that the Soviet model of communism did not fail, it was abandoned after much deliberate internal struggle against it.

Gorbachev was largely anti-communist in his measures. He was a revisionist (which means he abandoned classical Marxist principles) and implemented eclectic ideals to solve problems brought about by issues other than communist endeavors.

As to whether he was a positive or negative figure, it depends upon who you ask. For much oft he West, he was positive. For the East he was a negative figure that played a crucial role in destroying the Soviet Unioin.

Gorbachev's work from start to finish was that of dismantling the Soviet Union. Although it could be argued that he did not intend for that to happen, he employed politics against Marxist theory, made concessions resulting in public dissent, and invoked tactics that would take the Soviet Union away from advancing along communist ideological lines.

Your sources are mixed because like any leader, there is mixed investment in his role as leader.

His GLASNOST and PERESTROIKA allowed members of SOVIET Union to disintegrate. It revealed the truth within Communist SOVIET Union and stated that some principles are good enough to be read in academic books only. Certainly, he is a positive historical character who evolved new Russia. He tried something which delivered unexpected result and fort of communism destroyed in SOVIET Union.
