Question by poopy: How did Stalin positivly affect the Russian military?
How did the size of the military increase under Stalin??? How else was he good for Russia???

He increased the size of the Red Army dramatically, and laso had it modernised intensely, focusing on tanks, instead of Cavalry and Armoured cars (as it had under Trotsky's tutelge).

mac is right that his purgings severely hindered the military because it was mostly top ranking officers that were removed. the entire leadership structure had to be rebuilt.
one positive was that as an all powerfull dictator, stalin was able to make and carry out decisions quickly and on whatever scale he decided fit, unlike in a democracy where partisan squabling and a cumbersome bureaucracy usually slows things down and can create compromises that water down efforts. Russia as a nation pulled off some incredible feats of survival during WWII, many of which can be attributed to Stalin who refused to let the country surrender.

Those Russian generals and officers whom Stalin did not have murdered were released from the Gulags and other prisons then reinstated into the Soviet army to fight the Nazis.
