    The development of nuclear weapons and ICBM delivery systems coupled with the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction was the most serious threat of the Cold War. A mistake by either side for the last thirty years of the Cold War could have left the Northern Hemisphere devastated and life on earth threatened. Both sides contributed to this massive arms race and the deployment of ICBMs after about 1960 made the confrontation more unstable then it had been before their deployment.
