You have to bare in mind that the Volga is such a huge river in Russia that you cannot categorise its climate as it goes through so many time zones and differing areas. It would be like trying to categorise the climate of ‘Europe’ in general, you cannot for example group together winters in Czech Republic, Romania, etc, and compare them to Spain or Portugals climate in winter.

Volga is long. Too long to be categorized under one climate.

The Volga is the longest river in Europe, about 2,300 miles (3,700 km). It originates at an elevation of only 740 feet (225 m) in the Valdai Hills northwest of Moscow which are pretty cold in winter, connects with the Rybinsk Reservoir. The river heads east past Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan. From there it turns south past Samara which has an extreme climate ( hot summers and cold winters) and Volgograd (semi-arid and steppe climate). Since the initial elevation is so low, the river flows slowly, and finally enters the Caspian Sea, below sea level in a wide delta near Astrakhan (Steppe climate with cold winters and hot summers. Astrakhan is the driest city in Europe).
