How long will Russia occupy Chechnya before running away?

Question by jessica a: How long will Russia occupy Chechnya before running away like they did in Afghanistan?
Russia has been getting its butt handed to them in Chechnya for years now. Losses of millitary personnel, equipment, Russian soldiers deserting in mass. How much longer before the run back over the border into Russia with their tails tucked between their legs like they did in Afghanistan?
Actually I am a budding student of history and love research. I understand Chechnya is a Russian state in revolt against a very ruthless nation. But I also understand that Russia has suffered greater losses in Chechnya than they did in Afghanistan. They haven’t lost as many lives but they have lost more essential personal. They have lost 6 generals since 1999 that is a tremendous amount. More aircraft than in Afghanistan. I also know that this isn’t the first revolt..the first recorded was in the 16th century, then 1877, 1905, 1917, in the 1930’s, 1942, 1956, the first chechnyan war 1994 (russian military losses were over 6000, chechnya insurgence lost over 5000 and over 90,000 chechnyan civilians were killed) the second chechnyan war 1999 ( russian losses are over 4000 , chechnya insurgence losses are over 1400 with over 10,000 chechnyan civilians killed and another 3000 have vanished. I’m wondering how long Russian can take getting the crap kicked out of them before they free Chechny

until people of Chechnya stand up for their rights. No one can do anything if it only involves talking, get up and speak your mind, defend your country

ha ha for someone to say that they study history and come out with figures made up in such a small head, do have probs. maybe it's true what they say about dumb blondes.lol…actully the chechen conflct is the only conflict involveing major powers in which the rebels are handing them selves in to the authorites in their thousands, the rebels know they can't beat such an army that defeated three quaters of the german army in world war two.as for tail between their legs, remember siagon in vietnam, where the americans ran for thier lives as the red army rolled into siagon, and in kosovo when the russians went into prestina, general wesly clark asked the u.k and france to attack the russians cos america was too scared as a super power to do it them selves. and as for iraq you will never win as no country in history has ever won against a rebel army after invadeing thier country, france, u'k, u.s,germany, japan, have all failed in the past. so be prepared as you too will leave with your tail between your legs. bon voyage.

The Chechny'n rebels have sought and received aid from the same folks that brought you 9-11…. disaffected people in search of a cause to brighten up their otherwise worthless lives.

They probably have a legitimate reason for their feelings, but when they dropped poison gas in the Moscow Theater… they lost me.

When someone resorts to killing innocents to get them onto the 6 o'clock news…. all that means is that human life is meaningless to them and they should NEVER be put in a position of power over anyone.

They have earned an immediate death sentence in my eyes.
They are not fit to steal the air we need to breath.

Engaging a soldier on the battlefield?
Sure, I'll take whatever you throw at me…….

Killing innocent movie-goers because they're Russian?
Nope, just doesn't work that way…

History tells us that basically, Russia has never really done well in battles outside of their own lands…inside their own lands, they have done pretty well.
This time it seems its a much bigger problem, because both sides have no territorial advantage. Each know the land well, and its likely to go on a long time.

You are not a student of history. There are two different sets of circumstances. Relative to the USSR, Afghanistan was a foreign country. Besides the Afghanis, the USSR got resistance from other Muslim countries and from the US in the form of military aid.
Chechnya has been a part of Russia for thousands of years. The rebels in Chechnya are trying to break away and form their own country. We did not let rebels in the US break away and form their own country; see the Civil War 1861 to 1865.
Your horror story about Russian defeats are not true. Chechens are using the same sort of murderous tactics as the Iraqi terrorists. In both cases they are not winning anything, just killing people and damaging property.

Not for much longer. It really shows how Russia has diminished since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
