I have fired many, many AK variants and the recoil IMO is negligible. The newer AK's which are chambered in 5.45 millimeter recoil similarly to the M16 variants which is to say, hardly any. One can place an M16 variant against his crotch and fire it and not feel much of anything. Older AK's chambered in 7.62 have a bit more but it is considerably less than older weapons like the M1 Garand or even the most common hunting rifles like the 30-30. I am 5-7 or so and have never had any issue firing an AK. Young Iraqi kids have no problem shooting AK's.(and yes I have seen it live & in person)

It is a pretty big thump, like somebody punching you in the shoulder at meduim strength, But i was twelve when is shot one for the first time and i shot one about 1 round every 2 seconds, went through a whole clip ( 30 rounds).
Bronson says
AK gives tolerable recoil. If the character fires single shots or short bursts he should be ok. Fired full auto it will have a good climb. The character should be fine. I have a friend around 5'9 who shot an AK no problem.
Fatefinger says
It's nothing. People get all worked up over recoil "is it to much?" and there totality gun ignorant.
I bet you have never fired any type of gun in your entire lfe let alone held one. Do you have any 1st person firearm knowledge? Do you have any firearm knowledge at all? Being affected by recoil is totally a mental thing. It like many women with shotguns or larger caliber handguns. They think therefore it is.
ishootbirds2 says
a shove. I can't rapid-fire with my AK, with aimed shots I'm down to maybe 1 shot per 3 seconds. I don't see how anyone can fire one rapidly and hit anything larger than a mini fridge at 50 feet. Especially not a 12 year old child shooting an AK47 full auto so often depicted by those child solider news stores from various impoverished nations around the world.
Straight Westcoastin says
It's a nudge. The bark is worse than the bite.
Fried Water Nuggets says
Pretty much, if you don't hold it right, the recoil alone will blow your arm clean off.
Mike says
Around 10-14 pounds of recoil. Though, it really depends on:
1 Bullet weight + velocity
2 Gun weight
3 Points of contact (bipod, monopod, offhand, etc)
4 Barrel length
5 Powder selection (Faster burning or slower)
