Question by HoraceS: How best should I continue learning Russian?
How long do you think it will take to get proficiency in the language and how best should I continue learning? I’m definitely a language person and because I’ve mastered Latin, I find Russian pretty easy to learn. I’ve already got to grips with a lot of the grammar in a few weeks and I have enjoyed using linguaphone so far. The trickiest thing by far, is learning vocabulary. How best do you think I should expand my vocabulary? What resources should I use?
Thanks, so much.

Hm… let’s see about the vocabulary… How about reading some Russian newspapers or youth magazines? You can find plenty of them online.. IF you can’t find them, email me, I’ll give you the links ^.^
DO NOT read poetry or classical stuff for now. It’s really old Russian, and you might learn words that are no longer used in modern speech.
Also DO NOT buy books that say “Russian in a month” and stuff. They’ll most likely give you the wrong pronunciation or usage of words (I’ve witnessed it myself).
The best thing for you would be to find a text-book made by Russians for foreigners to learn Russian. I think it’s the most secure way to learn my language))) Good luck to you and email me if you have any questions in future!))

I think reading Russian classic novels would significantly expand your vocabulary. Works by Pushkin or Tolstoy, perhaps.

Not being a native speaker but having had learned to speak Russian in 18 months, I would suggest you to buy:
Conversational Russian in Seven Days (sarah baldwin, Shirley Boas)
Teach Yourself Russian (Teach yourself series)
Pimsleur Russian
Lonely Planet Beginner's and advanced Russian
Berlitz Self teacher Russian
also there's the free resource: A spoonful of Russian, by Natalia Worthington (google it)
this will give you just the starting point, having had learned this, you MUST practice with Russian native speakers, who will CORRECT your textbook Russian.
удачи!
