Look on the USPS website for information.

Then you may want to take it to the post office to post it – just make sure it is done properly.

priority mail via usps is excellent and inexpensive, you can even track your package on russianpost.ru.
you should also fill out custom form, and write address correctly. I usually write country, zip and city in English and then the whole address in Russian. Never had problem with them. Though sometimes might be slow (up to 1 month), but if you ship to central cities it would be pretty quick.

Write the address in English or Russian. Go to the post office, fill customs form and mail it. Global Express mail is more reliable in Russia as it is handled by a different agency. The regular post is usually not so good – one of my friend had his mail not delivered for a month because the postman was on vacation :/

You friends will pay 30% customs fee for the amount exceeding 10,000 rubles (approximately $ 320) so the will pay no fee for a $ 200 parcel and ~ $ 200 for a $ 1000 one.

Would be wise to ask your friends for an address first.
