I wouldn’t say it was the Second Symphony, no. By this time, Rakhmaninov’s musical language was so clear and distinct, I don’t really hear ANY echoes of Tchaikovsky.
I would say the clearest influence can be heard in his early symphonic poem ‘Prince Rostislav’; it could almost be a long-lost Tchaikovsky overture. Even the woodwind figurations sound like they have come straight out of a piece of Tchaikovsky.
