Question by rachel: is chekhov considered classical or contemporary?
I’m considering using a couple of Chekhov monologues for college auditions, and I cannot figure out if his plays are considered classical or contemporary. For a specific school I’m auditioning at, they say contemporary is anything written after the turn of the 20th century…so would Chekhov count?

Technically, Chekhov is a modern writer.
He is certainly not a classical writer, so by the restrictions of your question (classical or contemporary), he is a contemporary.
Contemporary writers are actually those who are currently living. Classical theatre is Greek theatre.
