Question by Jessica H: Is it worth going to Russia during first week of Jan?
I was planning to go to Russia over New Year but have heard that there are bank holidays across most of the first week of January. Does anybody know how much effect these have? Will everything be closed? Will public transport be running? Is it still worth going? Or should I try and go on at a different time? Thanks!

That’s the Russian Christmas time. They celebrate their Christmas 2 weeks later than the West, because the traditional Orthodox calendar. You can expect the same kind of service as in the West, I suppose.
I kind of envy you. White Christmas in Russia is something I really want to see one day.

Depends on what are you planning to do and what are you interested in.
National holidays last about 8 days (maybe 9) from Jan 1st till 8-9. Typical these days are also bank holidays. From 1st to 2nd/3rd some shops(even some tiny groccery stores) will be closed. That means you'll have to go to supermarket. Public transport works well in holidays, you should not worry about it. The main point to go to Russia at first week of New Year is to celebrate New Year itself along with Orthodox X-Mas and to have an experience living in country with 8 to 9 holidays in a row 😛

its going to be very expensive to get a hotel. I mean, insanely expensive. But yeah the whole first week is a holiday so most people will not be working which means fun for you. transport of course is running.
