Twenty years ago your question would have been relevant. Nowadays Moscow isn’t a dangerous city for a Western traveler.

What would you expect from a modern city with about 15 mil people?
Whatever dangers in New York or any big city – it would be the same in Moscow. Of course it is more unsafe from outsiders.
Here is what I would suggest
1. Do not carry a lot of money with you
2. Dress warm in winter
3. Do not drink with strangers or with anyone if you cannot hold the drinks. People will make sure you get drunk just for the fun of it.
4. Try to speak some Russian – if you speak only your language ouside – you can become a target.
5. Most important – don't be a tourist with an open mouth looking around – show people around you that you are aware and alert – that is it!

Local business partners who want to take you out and party with them. You can end up seriously drunk, and that can be dangerous in Moscow

If you drink 600 ml of vodka with beer and go to sleep in the street in winter you may catch cold
