I'm from Russia. Culture basically revolves around vodka and trying o support your family, now days anyway. There's not much open country there, but if you go to the ural mountains and to the lakes there it is truly beautiful. It's the most peaceful place to be. flower and berry picking in the summer. swimming in the lakes. You have to go to the red square in moscow. it's the most beautiful architecture you will ever see. And although I've never been there, I've hear St. Petersburge is exquisite.

Depends where in Russia you go. Moscow or St P are mostly like any other western city, for the other cities there is a big drop in terms of population and western reference points. If you go to the villages it's pretty much the third world

Russia is different. It has developed European cities such as St.Petersburg, Yekaterinburg as well as small faraway villages. If you want to see the most "russian" cities with ancient russian architecture you should visit Moscow, Novgorod or Vladimir. Siberian cities have their own specificity with old wooden merchant architecture (Tomsk, Omsk, Biysk). The most "soviet" cities – Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok with their large, monumental soviet buildings…
So you see the image of Russia is really different, reflecting the historical development from ancient to new Russia.

Western Russia is very european.
Same shops in Moscow as in any city in europe.
Architecture is fantastic.
people generally friendly.( european culture )
if you ever visit Moscow, do see places such as the church of christ the saviour, and the Kremlin museums. places such as Alexandria park are beautiful ( Italian white marble balustrades and black and gold marble fountains.the only thing that spoils it is a MacDonald's )

Russia is a fascinating place with wonderful people. You should visit sometime. I have 3 daughters and 2 of them were born in elsewhere. They love Russia!
Russia is so different, so historic, so large and spacious, so interesting that many people can't stop coming to visit. They try it once and then come again every summer. You could spend a month and not see everything you'd hope to see.
So, when are you coming to visit? http://www.visitrussia.com/ and http://www.waytorussia.net/
