Should we visit Moscow or St Petersburg in Russia?

Question by Christiney: Should we visit Moscow or St Petersburg?
My mum and me want to go to Russia next year in april time, but are not sure whether to go to Moscow or St Petersburg. any ideas?

p.s as well as sightseeing, we would like shopping and some nightlife- not really into hiking and that kind of thing, so whichever city has the best ‘city’ feel.

Moscow – more to see, more to do, and in your case more to buy. 🙂
Plus, if you ever get bored of the city itself (you won’t), you can always take a bus tour around the cities of the Golden Ring.

If you can only choose one, go for Petersburg. It's beautiful, not too big, much cleaner than Moscow with plenty to do Of course doing both is better because they are very different but I don't like the vibe of Moscow very much and the militsiya always seem to want to hassle me there.

Also, I agree slightly with the post that said April isn't a great month to visit Russia. Try to leave it until as late in April as possible. This is because March/earlyApril and November are the months when it is melting and freezing repeatedly and it's a bit slushy and slippery but it's still great. Russia's great anytime of the year.

April is the month when all Russia (and I mean all Russia) is
    dirty and ugly.
So – it does not matter

you should visit both – they are so different! St. Petersburg is amazingly beautiful, you will find there a nightlife of a different level – more intellectual, Moscow is more aggressive, party-like city, a lot of shopping and really big prices – but also worth seeing.
One suggestion – find someone in either of the cities you decide to visit, to be your guide – try on hi5 or icq… it could be easier to get a closer look of Russian Life.
