The difference between the Ukrainian language and the Russian language?

Question by loveomusic1214: What’s the difference between the Ukrainian language and the Russian language?
Is Ukrainian based off of Russian? is it very similar like how America and England speak English but use some different terms and have different accents? I’m just kind of curious…I don’t know much about it and I didn’t really understand what some of the websites I looked on, meant.

They are different languages. I don’t think either one is “based off” the other, but they have a common root, and they use the same alphabet, and the domination by Russia for so long has forced much borrowing and understanding between the two languages.

But be careful about saying that to any Ukranians! They tend to be quite nationalistic, and can get very offended by any intimation of relationship with Russian AT ALL!

First answerer makes false statement when they state that Ukrainian and Russian use same alphabet. We use similar alphabet but certainly not same! NO, Ukrainian is not "dialect" of Russian, this is Moskal propaganda and extension of their revisionist history that most Western lemmings will believe, knowing no better. This topic is too complex to discuss here, you can easily research this if you are serious about obtaining the knowledge but simple answer is no, Ukrainian is certainly not "dialect" of Russian and ethnic Ukrainians are NOT Russians.

These are both Slavic languages and they have a lot of common or similar words. They are like French and Spanish or Italian which are Roman languages and are very close. None of Slavic languages is based on another. Ukrainian language preserved more old Slavic elements.
