Lenin was more educated than Trotsky – he gained a law degree from Kazan’ University. And was a brilliant Marxist theoretician.
Trotsky was a better journalist, and a better speaker, but was not as consistent on Marxist theory as Lenin was. His position on many important issues varied over time and depending on the audience that he was addressing.
Both were vital for the October Revolution: Lenin was the motor, the powerhouse, the guiding light, but Trotsky was the gasoline – his oratory and organisational skills ensured that the seizure of power was a success.
The key difference between the two was that Lenin believed less in exporting the revolution and a constant turnaround of party personnel than Trotsky – there are other, minor doctrinal differences.
