One major difference betweent the two was Trotsky’s adherence to the doctrine of World Revolution while Stalin was in practice an adherent of Socialism in One Country – the Soviet Union. Although the Comintern – the Communist International – functioned under Stalin, it was used to further the aims of the Soviet Union and keep foreign communist parties in line, not to export the revolution . For more detail you reallly need to read biographies of Stalin and Trotsky.

Stalin: Stalin killed all opposition to his rule he got rid of Trotsky first, then other communist leaders, he arranged events called “the Great Purges” where high ranked officials of the party were accused of crimes against the Soviet state. Millions of people died to let Stalin continue to grasp power. Stalin wanted one country Socialism. Wanted to make the Soviet Union a dictatorship, thusly making Russia a totalitarian state.

Trotsky: Trotsky would have shown an idealistic approach to the same goal of modernizing. It is almost certain that Trotsky would have followed Lenin’s original principals and methods to create the best Soviet State possible, with a minimal cost of lives. But as a result of Stalin’s rule, millions and millions of innocent people died. He wanted worldwide Socialism. Trotsky believed that it was important if not vital that capitalist countries in the west would have a communist revolution, this way Russia would have allies.

Trotsky was against NEP (new economic policy) and for the restoration of democracy within the party, strengthening of the regime of proletariat dictatorship, the world revolution. Trotsky accused the soviet government in betreyal of ideals of October revolution.
Tensions between Trotsky and Stalin were due to the power struggle.
