Many Western nations have “free market” economies. The Soviet Union and its satellites had “planned” or “command” economies

In a Communist country everything is owned by the state, it is nationalised. In Western nations companies are privately owned. The Soviet countries tended to rely on self sufficiency, or trading with other communist countries, whereas Western countries trade with many countries they are on peaceful terms with.
