Yuri Gagarin didn’t “went to outer space”, he made the first manned orbital flight.
The man who actually “went” to outer space first was Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Leonov. This event (referred later as “spacewalk”) took place on 18th of March of 1965 from the “Voskhod-2” spacecraft.

It was a “space race” between the US and USSR, so if it had been faked the US would have publicized the fact.

Very unlikely, but something else which has been suggested is that in fact he was only the first successful cosmonaut, after a number of unsuccessful missions resulting in the death of the people concerned which were kept secret by the Soviets. However, i don’t feel convinced that that happened – can’t say why.

Why are people so fond of assuming historical events to be fake, these days?

Yes. The chances? A billion to one.
