I first went to Russia in 1996 as a videographer/photographer for a matchmaking company.
The biggest problem is the cultural differences between Russia and America. I lived there 6 months, fell in love got married 2 years later and now filing for divorce with 2 toddlers after 12 years of marriage.
We even created our own website and had 8 marriages that we know of. By 2001 I shut it down. The differences between the American men and Russian women were too great and US laws protected foreign women over their own citizens. Guys were 'open hearted' and the women manipulated them. Just last year I met an acquaintance and his Ukrainian wife who literally went criminally insane. She probably was already a wacko before she met him.
If you are a man you better make 100k a year. Money and status for Russians is a driving factor. As for the men looking? Many do not know what they are getting into. Some are real nice guys, as for the women there are few that have the morals, self esteem, humbleness and honesty to fulfill the needs of a relationship. Sex is a driving factor. The guy wants it and the girl is ready and willing to use her body. It is in Russian classical literature that prostitution is ok.
I remember a question posed to Russian 12 year olds, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The girls said prostitutes and the boys tax collectors. Russian mindset is in need of an enema.

I met my husband on such a site and I can tell you for sure I am not a scam. I have a university degree, I am 24 years old, with good looks, great cooking skills and constant emotional support for my American man. He is university degreed as well, has his own business that did not sink in the economic crisis storm and he makes tea for me in the morning just because he knows I like it. We have been together for five years and still are feeling like "just married". You know, it was worthy of going to a dating site.
As a Russian woman I can tell you – yes, a lot of Slavic females go to such dating sites because we want to get out of this pitiful crap that our wonderful government puts us every single day. We, as any other normal female, want a stable life when you do not have to be freaking out about how on earth you are ever going to get your own place to live and how are you going to afford to have at least one kid. Can you really blame us for our desire to live a comfortable life? As for our own guys, it is a whole big issue. In short words, there are much more males than men in Russia. Sad, but a proven fact.
THE TRICK IS that looking for a better destiny that we will probably have in Russia, we are not treasure-hunter who will marry any loser if he only has a western citizenship. This might sound as a paradox, but we in fact are very idealistic and even on a dating site look first of all for a soul mate not a bank account with a residence permit abroad. REALLY. Though, of course, there are always exceptions.
Russian women do not have this American I-want-stuff-all-the-time syndrome. They will never stab you in the back if you treat them kindly. EVEN if the marriage did not work out for some reason, they will never forbid the kids to meet you and will never tell them any kind of insulting crap about their father.
Of course there are all kinds of nasty b*tches all over the world and you never know when you are going to come over another spoiled hysterical female. But the odds of meeting such a beauty in the street in your home town are hardly smaller than on the Net.

Ironically, this is a major concern internationally, but I do have the answer due to some State Department contatcs.
Russia has a shortage of men: they currently make up about 40-44% of the population. So, when you find a woman online who is looking for a man outisde her country, one reason is because its hard to find one inside it.
On another note, finding a Russian bride is almost like any other online dating or match-making. Some men simply do not have the time to go out and search for a woman or try the dating game.
Many men who frequent Russian marriage sites are either older, established types, possibly previosuly married and cannot get back into the dating scene
or
Men who want a specific woman they cannot find back home. Currently I live in Italy, and let me tell you, I cannot remember seeing the types of woman I see here back in the States.
If you want a specific type of woman who is exotic, multicultural and is almost impossible to find in, say, Nebraska, then a good alternative is a mail order bride site.
As for some unscrupulous or shady things that may happen, that all depends on the agency. Just like buying a car, some places are more legal and legit than others. Some sites require you to submit a criminal and mental stability background check and proof of financial stability. Why? To avoid human trafficking and the potential abuse.
Other sites? Well, they may require you to sign the check…and thats it.
Do your research. And the good sites will allow the woman to refuse or turn down a man. It goes beyond money: they want a life and a man who will treat them like a woman. Currently, in the state of Russia and its Socialism along with its high military activities, men don't always put that as a priority in Russia.
Its not desperation: its just a lack of availability, on both sides.
So when you see a woman looking to find a husband outside of Russia, just know that behind that picture and profile of her may be a woman who is educated and proper, but simply couldn't find the man she wanted in her 'shortage of men' country.

They're nothing but scams.
At best they'll just empty your bank account.
At worst you'll end up in prison for working for a White Slavery Ring.
I don't know why websites are running ads for these places.
