What does the name Medvedev mean in Russian?

Question by goauldstink: what does the Russian name Medvedev mean?
I know a medved is a bear, but is this something like “bear baiter” ? I know that was popular in Russia once.

Medvedev (Russian: Медведев) and female Medvedeva (Медведева), from Russian medved’ , meaning the animal “bear”, are Russian surnames.

    medved is bear and "ev" is added at the end is just mean that it is surname. Almost all of Russian surname have something like "ev", "ov" etc at the end. Sorry for illegible English.

    Laterally it means "bear's" or bear's son. Like Ivanov actually means "son of Ivan".
    It doesn't actually mean that the surname started with some animal. It just means that the starter of the family line had an animalistic nickname and they were popular in Medieval Russia (Wolf, Hare, Hawk and such)
