It's about Prince Myshkin, an uneducated, not very intelligent, somewhat innocent young man returning from a Swiss sanatorium.
Although he is a decent and sensitive individual, he comes across in his society as a simplistic idiot. This is due to his values of honesty, kindness, graciousness,etc.
[SPOILER ALERT:] When Myshkin receives a large inheritance, an imposter (claiming to be the illegitimate son of Myshkin's benefactor) blackmails him. Even after the false story is debunked, Myshkin kindly befriends the wrongdoer and his accomplices.
