What is the cheapest way to fly to Russia?

Question by : What is the cheapest way to fly to Russia?
Would it be cheaper/safer to fly straight to Russia or would it be better to fly to Belarus or Ukraine and drive to Russia? And if it would be better to fly into Ukraine/Belarus, would you be able to visit (At least see in the distance) Chernobyl?
From: Miami, Dallas or Shreveport
Destination: Moscow or a better place to actually experience Russia and buy Military Surplus Items

That depends on the airlines company, since you did not indicate your location I am unable to answer you question with numbers. When I am traveling between Moscow and EU I prefer straight flights with EU national carriers as they often have attractive discounts. However, there is a number of discounter carriers like AirBerlin or Germanwings you can fly virtually for peanuts if you book well beforehand (normally 3 months ahead), but the number of locations they operate is limited. Flying via Ukraine is not necessarily the cheapest option, often it is more convenient to change in Riga or Warsaw if you travel with the normal airlines. As an example, you can travel between Moscow and Frankfurt, Germany, for as much as 180 EUR with Lufthansa and 129 EUR with a discounter (round ticket), direct flights. This is much cheaper than a local flight for the same distance. But if you travel between Moscow and Toronto, Canada, then the cheapest option is Aerosvit via Kyiv, Ukraine – that costs 850 EUR.

upd.

for flights 20 JUL (to) and 27 JUL 2011 (back)

Miami to Moscow 1 stop (via Atlanta) $ 1,150 Delta Airlines
20 JUL 12:15 DL130 MIAMI to ATLANTA
20 JUL 15:20 DL46 ATLANTA to MOSCOW SVO, arrival: 10:10 (+1)
27 JUL 12:05 DL47 MOSCOW SVO to ATLANTA, arrival 15:45
27 JUL 17:35 DL75 ATLANTA to MIAMI

Miami to Kyiv 1 stop $ 1,606 Delta Airlines, Alitalia, Aerosvit
Miami to Minsk 1 stop $ 1,453 Delta Airlines, Aeroflot

obviously it is cheaper to fly to Moscow

upd2. I checked Dallas and Shreveport – they are more expensive, the cheapest option to Moscow is $ 1,433

If your destination is Moscow then it’s much better to fly directly there.

Driving long distances isn’t recommend in Russia and I wouldn’t advise you to try driving around Belarus/Ukraine either.

As for Chernobyl, as far as I know you need a book a tour to get anywhere near the place. If you want to see Chernobyl then you could fly to Kiev, stay there for a few days, go on a tour to Chernobyl then get the train to Moscow, it will be much easier than driving.

To experience real Russia you need to head out of Moscow/St Petersburg and go into the countryside or small towns.

From Moscow you can go on day trips to small cities in the Golden Ring, this will give you a better experience of Russia than just staying in Moscow.
