What stops are recommended on the Trans-Siberian Railway?

Question by Thomas Allen: Recommended stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway.?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. We have singled out places like Suzdal, Ekateringburg, Novosibirsk/Tomsk, Irkutsk and of course Lake Baikal.

Is anyone able to give advice on how we manage to get off the beaten track and into true Siberia in little random towns?

Try Siberian towns like Angarsk, Kirensk. You can take a plane to Yakutsk (even trains don’t go there! :)). Try villages of Chita, Visit Ulan-Ude and Buryatia

Depending on how you are booking your ticket, you could go with a company that includes trips out from some of the stops. You can even stay with local families with some companies to really get to know the areas.

Ulan Ude would be a good option.

You've been given good advice with some very interesting cities. Frankly, you'll have opportunities to "get off the beaten track" every hour. Russia's population is only half the US population, yet the country is much larger.

The question is, with lack of services, can you survive very well in one of thos little random Siberian towns?
