Trekking backpack – $ 150

There are some things money can’t buy- for everything else, there’s MasterCard.
VISA doesn’t work well in Russia, I’d definitely bring a MasterCard as backup.

You will definitely need the business Visa…give yourself plenty of time…it took me almost 3 weeks to get my visa through a company in New York called CTCV or some variation of those letters. They charged $ 200 for the Visa and $ 200 for the letter of invitation, but that was for a tourist Visa. The company from the other answer may be better. You won't need the Visa to travel between cities, but if you plan on leaving the country at all during those 5 weeks be sure to get a multiple entry visa.

For 5 weeks in Russia you will need a Business Visa, since Tourist Visa only allows 30 days in Russia. Getting a Business Visa does not necessary means you have to conduct business in Russia.
In order for you to get the business visa, you need a business invitation. You can easily obtain it from this site, which I have used many times in the past. You can actually use this site as your point of reference on how to apply for visa.
