Dostoevsky was an existentialist writer. Existentialism is a complete philosophy, so if you want to know more about it, just look it up on wikipedia. In a nutshell, existentialists believe that individuals are isolated and very selfish, either God doesn’t exist or doesn’t care about humans, and that because of all this, people should live for the sake of their own happiness.
