Gagarin was the first man to orbit the planet, not John Glenn. I don't want to diss Glenn or any of the other great Mercury Astronauts but the US played catchup in the space race and you can call Gagarin the first real Astronaut, though of course he was a cosmonaut. He was still working for the Russian Space Agency when he died in a plane crash.
