other than the 2 sputniks, and the Yuri Gagarin mission, did the soviets have any major space missions during this time?

Russians were first to send a craft to moon first to photograph other side of moon, bring sample from moon with out sending man.Lunakhod a moving rover was send to surface of moon which traveled on lunar surface.Send crafts to Venus succesfully to soft land and send pictures of venus surface.Crafs to Mars did not succeed we,,/

The first spacewalk was done by a cosmonaut named Alexei Leonov in 1965. I'd call that major.

The soviets had a lot of great stuff, your definition of major just lacks some thinking.
