What were Soviet tactics in the war in Afghanistan?

Question by Kozlinaya Golova: What do you think about Soviet tactics in the war in Afghanistan?
I myself am Jewish, and support Israel in the war on terror. Yet I believe that Soviet tactics in 1980-s went too far. Likewise, I condemn US tactics in Japan 1945. What do you think?

You’re Jewish & support the Jews acting like Nazi’s towards the Palestinians? And yet you condemn US tactics towards Japan? And you believe the Soviets went too far?

Hippocratic. At best.

The Soviets went into Afghanistan on the request of the then legitimate government of Afghanistan to aid against the Mujaheddin. Before the war the Soviet Union had long established relations with the Afghan government dating back over sixty years before the 1979 war.
The Soviets gave Afghanistan schools, food, trade, medicine and a standard of living much higher than they would have had with either the Taliban or the US.
Had the US turned a blind eye to the Soviet invasion the country would not be in the mess it is in today, many lives would have been spared, Osama bin Laden would not be a household name today, the twin towers would likely still be standing, the US would not be embroiled in another quagmire and Afghanistan would just be another former Soviet "Stan".

I think you are not as informed about the events in the worlds past as you should be. Hind sight is always 20/20 but when you have to make life and death decisions right now things are much different. I read a lot of history but I also know the times now are much different than at the times I read about long ago. I try not to ever judge history because you would always be wrong. We live in different times and can not imagine how it would be living during the times when these decisions were made. You say you support Israel in it's war on terror. With this statement you open yourself up to second guessing because this is a ongoing conflict today. This terror you support, have you ever thought about the way Israel expands may be the fuel for the terror? If you take a families home and land then build you a home on this place you have just created the terrorist you support Israel in fighting. You create the enemy you want to defeat. Everyday for 60 years you have been creating this enemy for you to fight. 60 years ago Israel was founded and had borders. Then they fought with the nations around them and took more land, this land has caused the fight on terrorist. Why does China want to take Taiwan? Why does Israel want to take farmers land?

Sounds like you are a bit confused…you agree with Israel, yet you believe the US erred in Japan in '45. You think the Sov's "went too far", but of course they got their A$ $ handed to them and they left the country in shame. What do I think?
I think you are confused, and obviously pro Israeli. So what?

While I do support Israel's fight against terrorism, Israel has killed more Palestinians that what died in the bombing of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.

You are in no position to judge the US if you have supported Israel's against the Palestinians.

That fact is war is horrible and in the end it is the responsibility of any leader to win war with the least amount of casualties. Had the US invaded Japan and killed millions (which would have happened), we would have faced even harsher criticism.

You mean those nuclear bombings that killed a few hundred thousands? Those tactics? You know how many Japanese would have died if we would have invaded Japan right? Millions at least.
