Question by Lleh: When the soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and Gorbachev resigned what happened at all the Soviet Embassies?
I mean did the people who worked there still get paid? Did they pack up and go home to Russia? Were they replaced or did the same people keep on working? Was there chaos and disorder or was it business as usual? A good example would be the embassy in Mexico but I’d welcome comments from anyone who knows about any of the Soviet embassies.

They became Russian embassies. I am sure they scaled back a bit, but the cities (US) I have lived in still have Russian embassies.
I assume the staff changed. I wish I knew for sure, sorry.

i would expect they were professionals and still loved their old country.
they probably carried home whatever they could and sold everythign else. they didnt want the enemy to get them.

I believe that they were laid off, given a ride home, retained by the Russian Federation (because they were important), or hired by foreign powers (because they were important.)
No one was stranded. Merely unemployed at worst, and hired by the CIA at best.
