In 1905, the The Tsaritsa, was looking for help with her husbands illness (which we now know as hemophilia), asked her best friend, Anna Vyrubova, to contact Rasputin. Rasputin was already known as a healer.

Rasputin was first introduced to the Emperor and Empress in November of 1905. After meeting the occult-happy sisters, Militsa and Anastasia Montenegrin, daughters of the King of Montenegro, Rasputin then met the Romanov's for the second time in the summer of 1906. Rasputin was sought while Alix, the emperor's wife, looked for someone to help heal her son, Alexei who was suffering from hemophilia. Alix carried the same gene mutation from her grandmother, Queen Victoria of England and felt an obligation to find a cure for her only son. Rasputin was allowed to meet Alexei and the other children in October of 1906. From there on Rasputin was allowed in court and offered advise to the Emperor…which was a bad idea!

This seems to vary depending on what source you look at! Some say 1905. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia reports that although he arrived in St Petersburg in 1905, he was not invited to the czar's palace until 1907. Others say he arrived in 1903 and was introduced to the Tsar in 1905.

Several sources say it was the bishop of Saratov who introduced him to the Tsar.
